Refreshingly engaging and unabashedly honest, Fight With Me is one couple’s account of their attempts to start their marriage well. In this fun, approachable and practical book, Tim and Olive draw from their real-life stories to offer an inside look at the triumphs and failures they encountered as they learned to be husband and wife. Written with both of their perspectives, this little gem is not a “how-to” guide but rather a “how-we” companion for anyone who longs for deeper relationships.

I understand the premise - that you should work with your partner to see things from their perspective and not shy away from difficult conversations. But to me it was too contrived. For example, having planning days for the marriage just turned me off. Some of the outcomes were a bit too pat. This couple hasn't really been together for long, and I would really like to see how things pan out in the long term. At times I also felt that there was too much neediness. For example, why did Tim have to forego a city tour with his parents to be with his Olive in the hotel room? Surely she could have stayed there herself? It really didn't do it for me.

Fight With Me How We Learned to be Married Tim Chan Olive Chan 9780991810956 Books Reviews

I thought this book was interesting. I read it to try to improve my own relationship and there were some things for me to think about.
A fantastic read! You could tell that the couple who wrote this genuinely love each other and genuinely care about their relationship. The things they fight about are real,so their solutions offered on how to manage conflict is also real, and resonates greatly with this reader! So saddened by the fact that this was a short read!
This book is refreshing. It's essential for married couples in any season of their marriage, be it their first or 50th! The authors, Tim and Olive Chan are transparent and genuine and their stories are heartfelt and encouraging. They touch on issues that are crucial for building a successful marriage from the importance of learning how to fight to setting aside time/days to dream together. They also share how their own personal struggles and illnesses (burnout and depression) have affected their marriage. Highly recommended for any married couple!
Although I was looking for more information on actual fighting, what to do when you and your spouse argue a lot, the points made in this book regarding how to develop your relationship into a lasting one are good ones. It lays out the couple's steps to establishing the strong foundation they have built their marriage upon, in realistic scenarios we can all use.
Ok, I've read all the reviews before mine & suffice to say that though this couple are young, they've actually been able to hit notes no one else has for me. Very exciting + easy read, fresh (as one review states) and fair. Marriage is between 2 people, once anyone else gets in the way ( parents, kids, siblings) it becomes something else- a mirage.
Unique book about marriage! As someone who is looking forward to being married, I enjoyed reading this short book which details some interesting ways the authors viewed communication. While there are definitely Christian messages in this book, as an atheist I still found the book useful and did not think the religious aspect of the book was overpowering (in some books, it really is!). I felt any newlyweds or soon to be married couple could benefit from reading this book.
I really connected to the authors when reading this book. I can imagine them as my friends and that made the book fun to read. A lot of times I found myself agreeing with them, but even when I didn't I could still understand their point of view. They made me laugh and also reflect, so it struck a balance between being fun and being informative. It was also interesting to have both points of view. A lot of relationship books only give you one side of the story, so it was refreshing to get both perspectives. Overall I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good relationship book, whether they're seeking some insight for the next relationship or if they're looking for some relatable info for their romance now, it's a great buy.
I understand the premise - that you should work with your partner to see things from their perspective and not shy away from difficult conversations. But to me it was too contrived.
